JIM BREUKELMAN - Out of Fiction
September 6 to October 12
In his first exhibition at Republic since 2009, Vancouver photographer Jim Breukelman returns with a new body of work highlighting his recent experimentation with photoassemblage. As its title implies, Out of Fiction borrows from both fantasy – for example, science fiction or the raw creativity often displayed in children’s colouring books – and reality: how these processes of imagination manifest themselves “in ways both foreseeable and unforeseeable”. The act of bringing these elements together in finished photographic works illuminates the proximity of their origins in a historical, cultural imaginary, as well as the tenuousness of the divisions between them.
