Ryan Peter’s solo exhibition SEDIMENT features paintings on plastic alongside a selection of photograms concerned with the relationship between painting and photography. Beginning with the poster as a display mechanism, Ryan Peter repurposes the remnant packaging from his materials : studio sediment accruing as the result of production - as compositional elements in his paintings. Watered down paints are applied to the plastic veneer, drying slowly and producing an uneasy union with uncannily natural results - fractal forms evoking everything from galaxies to rock formations. The finished work appears completely flat, smooth, and reflective, where these waste elements are captured during their transition from life (use-value) to death (trash).
Based in Vancouver, Ryan Peter holds a BFA (2004) and an MFA (2008) from The University of British Columbia. He was a finalist for the 11th Annual RBC Canada Painting Competition, exhibited at the Musee d'art contemporain de Montreal and at The Power Plant in Toronto. He has participated in recent group exhibitions Susan Hobbs gallery, Toronto, and OR Gallery, Vancouver. This is Ryan Peter's third solo show with Republic Gallery.
