Republic Gallery is pleased to present Pulp, a solo exhibition of new work by Andrea Pinheiro. This installation features six works in which the artist extends her interest in photography and painting, through their interaction with one another.
Two distinct series, Island and Paper, recontextualize the photographic surface through the application of a painted mask. In the first, small pinhole images are reduced to little more than gestures hidden beneath thick daubs of paint. The wide angle distortion of the lens used transforms the photographic index into a semi-abstracted island on the photo paper. Pinheiro’s Paper series shifts the responsibility of the camera as documentarian to the scanner, where sheets of blank photographic paper are applied with paint and allowed to transform within the bed of the scanner, as the colour shifts through its exposure to light.
