Stoppages is the latest work in Antonia Hirsch’s ongoing World Map Project series, begun in 2000. Stoppages is designed as a portable unit that involves polyester straps of the type commonly used for the purposes of restraint or containment; these render the land borders of each sovereign country in the world at a scale of 1:1,000,000. For the exhibition at Republic Gallery, Stoppages —as a highly abstracted map—is transposed into the real space of the gallery, thereby giving rise to a dubious alliance of states.
